How to open the developer console in your web browser

The developer console is a tool in most web browsers. It logs the information associated with a web page, such as JavaScript errors, network requests, and security errors. It also helps developers test and build websites.

When you encounter a technical issue with the Teach Starter website, the information displayed in the developer console can be very helpful when we're trying to figure out how to solve the issue. While we work through an issue with you, the Teach Starter support team might ask you to take a screenshot of the developer console.

How to open the develop console in your web browser

Chrome

To open the developer console on Chrome, use the keyboard shortcut:

  • Ctrl+Shift+J (on Windows)

  • Ctrl+Option+J (on Mac)

You can also use the Chrome menu in the browser window to select the option "More Tools," and then select "Developer Tools."


Safari

To open the developer console on Safari, you will first need to turn on the Develop menu. You can do this by opening the Safari menu in the Mac menu bar, then selecting "Preferences".

Once in the Preferences dialog, navigate to the Advanced tab, then check the "Show Develop menu in the menu bar" box.

Now that you have enabled the Develop menu, you can go to the Develop menu in the menu bar and then select the "Show JavaScript Console" option.


Edge

To open the developer console on Edge, use the keyboard shortcut:

  • F12 (on Windows)

Once in the F12 Developer Tools, navigate to the Console tab.


Firefox

To open the developer console on Firefox, use the keyboard shortcut:

  • Ctrl+Shift+K (on Windows)

  • Ctrl+Option+K (on Mac). 

You can also use the Mac menu bar to select the option "Tools", and then select "Web Developer" > "Web Console".
